How to Manually Set Up the ProMatrix Newsgroups

This page describes how to set up Microsoft Outlook Express to access the ProMatrix Newsgroups. The instructions are based on Microsoft Outlook Express because Outlook Express is the newsgroup software used by most ProMatrix users. Setting up other newsgroup software to access the ProMatrix Newsgroups should involve the same basic steps. Outlook Express is available for free from Microsoft or the Microsoft Web.
American Online (AOL): If you use AOL, follow the steps below to set up Outlook Express. Then, follow the steps in the ProMatrix Corporation - Visual FoxPro section below to access the  ProMatrix Newsgroups after you have OE set up.
The steps you should follow to access the ProMatrix Newsgroups will differ somewhat depending upon whether you have been assigned a ProMatrix Partner User Name and Password for ProMatrix Partner Newsgroup access. If you are eligible for ProMatrix Partner Support, you should have a ProMatrix Partner User Name and Password that will give you access to the ProMatrix Partner Newsgroups.

To Set Up MS Outlook Express to Access the ProMatrix Newsgroups

The following steps assume that you have an Internet account and an email address.
  1. Connect to the Internet. (AOL Users: Connect to AOL.) Start OE.
  2. On the OE Tools menu select the Accounts... option. OE displays the Internet Accounts dialog. Click the News tab.
  3. The News page displays your current News Accounts (a.k.a., news servers), if any. Click the Add button. Click News... on the popup menu. OE displays the Internet Connection Wizard.
  4. In the Display name: box enter the name you would like to display when you post a newsgroup message. Click Next.
  5. In the E-mail address: box enter your email address. Click Next.
  6. In the News (NNTP) server: box enter "news.promatrix.com" without the quotes.
  7. If you have a ProMatrix Partner User Name and Password, click the "My news server requires me to log on" checkbox.
  8. Click Next. If you have a ProMatrix Partner User Name and Password, go to step 9. Otherwise, go to step 10.
  9. If you clicked the "My news server requires me to log on" checkbox, OE displays the Internet News Server Logon page. In the News account name: box enter the ProMatrix Partner User Name assigned to you. In the Passwords: box enter the ProMatrix Partner Password assigned to you. Click Next.
  10. AOL Users: If you use AOL to access the Internet, select the "Connect using my local area network (LAN)" option on the "Choose Connection Type" page of the Connection Wizard.
  11. Complete the remaining pages of the Internet Connection Wizard. Click Finish.
  12. Click Close to close the Internet Accounts dialog.
  13. OE displays the message "Would you like to download newsgroups from the news server you added?" Click Yes. OE will connect to the ProMatrix news server and retrieve a list of newsgroups.
  14. Double-click the newsgroups to subscribe to them. Click the Go to button on the Newsgroups dialog. You are now subscribed to the ProMatrix Newsgroups and the message headers on those Newsgroups will be downloaded when you select them in the left frame of Outlook Express.
  15. If you are new to Outlook Express, open OE Help to familiarize yourself with OE's capabilities.

AOL Access

If you use AOL to connect to the Internet, you must connect to AOL and then run Outlook Express to access the ProMatrix Newsgroups. Be sure that you have the "Connect using my local area network (LAN)" option selected on the Connection page of the news.promatrix.com account's Properties dialog in OE.
